This article is simply a list of the Nightshade (Solanacea) family of plants that are most common in the American diet. Wikipedia – Solanacea. Some people (like me) have a sensitivity to the plants listed here.

  • Tomatoes
  • Potatoes
    • Russet Potatoes
    • Red Potatoes
    • Yukon Gold
    • Did you know there are over 4,000 varieties of potatoes*?!
    • Potatoes are also processed into other products and mixed with other foods:
      • Potato Starch
      • Potato Flour
      • Maltodextrin (flavor enhancer that’s often derived from potatoes)
      • Modified food starch (often made from potatoes)
      • French Fries
    • NOT Potatoes: Sweet potato and yams are not in in the nightshade family.
  • Peppers
    • Bell pepper
    • Habanero
    • Chili pepper
    • JalapeƱo
    • and many many more
    • NOT a nightshade pepper: Peppercorns: black pepper, white pepper
  • Goji Berry
  • Egg Plant
  • Tobacco
  • Tomatillo

This is my list of nightshade foods and food products people in the US are typically eating. The big shock to me is how many products could have potato flour and potato starch.

I made this list of nightshade foods, because I have a potato sensitivity that caused my lifelong eczema.
