Why I’m Voting for Andrew Yang, a Letter to the New York Times

The New York Times editorial board recently requested letters from its readers on which candidates they support for the 2020 presidential race. Here’s my submission:

I’m a new father and marketer in Portland, OR. I’m voting for Andrew Yang.

A study by ECONorthwest uncovered Oregon has 156,000 households one paycheck or emergency away from homelessness, and existing public and private services are not equipped to handle this.

It’s well known that welfare disincentivizes work, discourages marriage, doesn’t reach everyone it’s intended to help, and doesn’t acknowledge critical unpaid work like caring for kids and elderly parents. People throughout society need help, but means tested programs are inefficient, don’t help students or entrepreneurs, and are saddled with stigma.

Like Thomas Paine and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, Yang is proposing an unconditional basic income (UBI) to eradicate poverty, and meaningfully help all Americans regardless of them meeting special conditions.

Yang is refreshingly pro-business and pro-property rights, yet he’s progressive on countless issues. Check out the policy page on his website.

Yang can beat Trump. As President Trump said in regards to the 2020 race, “the only thing I worry about is that some total unknown that nobody ever heard of comes along.”

Yang is unknown, but what he lacks in celebrity, he makes up for in transformative policy.
