To Appreciate Andrew Yang’s Message, Listen to a Long-form Interview or Podcast

(Last Updated On: )

The interviews just keep coming, so this article is being updated with the most recent longform interviews shown first.

Thanks to the traditional format breaking mediums of podcasts and YouTube, Democratic Presidential Candidate Andrew Yang has been able to do a number of long form interviews where he’s had the chance to outline his plans and policy for America in detail.

Unlike other candidates who are leaning on stump speeches, late night talk show appearances, and sound bites, Andrew Yang has done over a dozen podcasts that were 45 minutes long or longer, allowing him to to flesh out his ideas while being challenged by hosts.

If you don’t want to parse through the 150+ policy stances on Andrew Yang’s policy page, but want to know where he stands on issues, pop in your headphones and listen to one of these interviews.

New York Time’s ‘The Choice’ Andrew Yang

“Andrew Yang is the least out touch of the candidates,” said editorial board member Mara Gay in the post interview deliberation.

“Incredibly refreshing,” podcast host Katie Kingsbury added as her and Mara discussed Yang’s humility later.

As part of their 2020 US presidential election coverage, The New York Time’s editorial board spent 45 minutes interviewing Andrew Yang (and all other candidates still in the running). Search for ‘The Choice’ where ever you get podcasts or visit the Time’s webpage deovted to the Yang interview. Be sure to also checkout the 17 minute deliberation episode without Andrew Yang.

This was one of the most rigorous and intellectual interviews on this list. It was cordial, but intense.

An interesting takeaway is that the interviewers said they liked Andrew personally, and would love to see his policies and reforms launched in New York City (where they all reside and the Times is based). They also entertained the idea of Yang having a prominent secretary position where his ideas could be tested.

Andrew Yang made his second appearance on the H3 Podcast on December 20th 2019, after the December Democratic primary debates.

Washington Post Live – The 2020 Candidates: Andrew Yang

Andrew Yang was interviewed by the Washington Post in front of a live studio audience on October 21st, 2019. This 50 minute interview is available on all major podcast networks, and YouTube.

Alyssa Milano: Sorry Not Sorry – Presidential Candidate Andrew Yang

Topics ranged from the injustice of the water situation in Flint Michigan; acknowledging the unpaid work of parents and care providers; and tackling the future of work. This episode is available on all major podcast apps.

The Portal by Eric Weinstein #7: Andrew Yang

Rogue intellectual Eric Weinstein spends approximately 60 minutes interviewing Andrew Yang on his podcast, “The Portal” which was released on October 2nd, 2019. The two appear to be old friends, and get into the societal challenges that brought about Yang’s presidency. This episode is available wherever you get podcasts.

Andrew Yang sat down with Ryan Higa and friends on September 15th, 2019 to discuss his 2020 run for president. The conversation was 50 minutes long. The discussion ranged from universal basic income (UBI), to beating Trump, foreign policy, and aliens.

H3 Podcast: Episode 132 – Andrew Yang

Recode Decode: Why 2020 presidential candidate Andrew Yang doesn’t want to break up Google

Published on July 18th 2019, this 69 minute interview by Kara Swisher focuses on what it means to be a tech centric candidate, the logistics of the Freedom Dividend, and why it may not be a good call to break up big tech.

This interview is available wherever you get your podcasts.

Pod Save America: Andrew Yang Interview 6-14-19

Pod Save America is a progressive political podcast. Andrew’s interview is 45 minutes long and available wherever you get podcasts.

NHPR: 2020 Candidate Conversation: Andrew Yang

This long form interview with Democratic Presidential Candidate Andrew Yang was recorded on May 9th 2019 by New Hampshire Public Radio.

This interview is great because the interviewer asks tough questions (not as tough as Ben Shapiro), and also features call-ins of people asking questions.

Audio and YouTube versions of this 58 minute interview can be found here:

Joe Rogan Experience Podcast – Episode 1245

Available wherever you get podcasts, this interview was 122 minutes long, with a few minutes of commercials at the beginning and end. As of October 2nd, 2019, the February 2019 interview has 4.1 million YouTube views, and likely millions more podcast downloads. This interview is what sparked my interest in UBI and made a fan of Andrew Yang.

Freakonomics Radio – Episode 362

Sorry, YouTube won’t let me embed this video. It’s a 50 minute conversation with Freakonomics author, Stephen Dubner — also available as a podcast.

Ben Shapiro Sunday Special – Episode 45

Andrew Yang subjected himself to a surprisingly rational conversation with conservative and libertarian Ben Shapiro. This interview is also available where ever you get your podcasts, and as of this writing, this YouTube video has been seen 1.1 million times.

This is a great example of how using the long form format of YouTube or a podcast, great conversations can be had between progressives and conservatives, though I would say Andrew Yang sits largely outside of the existing political spectrum by advocating for policy updates across and outside of current political norms.

Breakfast Club Radio Show – March 8th, 2019

This was one of my favorite interviews, because Andrew Yang gracefully answers very warranted skepticism about his plans. Like the other interviews in this list, this is also available whereever you get podcasts.

This video has now been seen over 1,000,000 times on YouTube, 400,000 more views than Mayor Pete’s interview, and just 20,000 fewer views than the Bernie Sanders interview which was recorded four days prior.

Making Sense with Sam Harris #130

Sam Harris was one of the first big podcasters to have Andrew Yang on. Though his interviews tend to feature academics from a variety of fields, this was an interesting 65 minute conversation about the future of work, and why Trump won. A bonus of the Sam Harris podcast is that he doesn’t run ads because he’s morally opposed to them and their potential influence.

FOMO Sapiens – April 3rd, 2019

Sorry, no YouTube embed on this one, but available where ever you get podcasts, FOMO (fear of missing out) Sapiens with Patrick McGinnis, is a Harvard Business Review (HBR) podcast on how our existence is changing. Andrew and Patrick spoke for 43 minutes.

Rubin Report: Andrew Yang Live

Andrew Yang fed himself to the wolves yet again on June 7th, 2019, by agreeing to be interviewed by Dave Rubin, a self identified “classical liberal.” The interview is over 2 hours long, and there was no question vetting in advance according to the host. As of the addition of this podcast / interview to this article June 13, the interview has over 250k YouTube views.

Stay Tuned with Preet

What’s it like to grow up as an Asian minority in America? Preet and Andrew dive into this very personal topic as well as the usual discussion on why Andrew Yang wants to give everyone a $1,000/month “Freedom Dividend.”

This podcast is recorded at WNYC (NPR) on May 30th 2019, and is available whereever you get podcasts. Please note, the interview starts 22 minutes in and lasts about an hour.

The Argument: Death to the Meritocracy with Andrew Yang

This New York Time’s podcast spends about 35 minutes interviewing Andrew Yang, then unfortunately jumps into a misinformed 20 minute panel discussion without Andrew that calls out downsides to Andrew Yang’s plans without giving Andrew the ability to defend.

This made the interview seem a bit biased and odd, but still it’s an interesting listen. This podcast is available where ever you get podcasts – download links can be found here.

Restoring Democracy | Andrew Yang Town Hall with Lawrence Lessig (4-9-19)

Unfortunately, this one the one that’s not available as a podcast, but I felt compelled to include this interview Lessig because it is such an important conversation about our democracy. (Lawrence Lessig, is the pre-eminent thinker of our time on getting money out of politics. He has some great Ted Talks and has even appeared on the Joe Rogan show a couple times himself.)

These are my favorite long-form Andrew Yang interviews in Podcast and YouTube format. I especially like these because they’re from very established podcasters, have great sound quality, and minimal ad intrusions.

Are there any other long form (>45 minute) Andrew Yang podcast interviews that you love that I missed? Please let me know if the comments.
