Oregon Crabbing Season is Here

Hey All – Oregon Crabbing season just opened! Dungeness Crab is being delivered fresh to local super markets. I saw it at Freddy’s the other day for only $5.97/pound. I bought two big crab for $16.

In this instance, the crab is sold pre-cooked – so it’s ready to eat. The meat department will clean the crab for you too before they wrap it up.

Crab is available year round because it is often frozen, however, right now it is available fresh. If you are going to partake – be sure to ask your local meat department if it is fresh or “previously frozen”. The frozen isn’t bad, but definitely worth it to take advantage of the fresh stuff while it’s available.

Eating Oregon Dungeness Crab is a great way to support Oregon’s coastal economy, and a way to support a sustainable and regulated fishery.

On a sad note, a fishing vessel, the Mary B II went down early last week on it’s way back into Newport’s Yaquina Harbor and three people died. What’s especially tragic about this accident is that it happened at the beginning of the season, so these families will not be receiving income from fishing this year. Finally – I am a huge fan of dungeness crab – it has a really nice almost sweet flavor. Sarah and I precrack our crab, rather than crack while we eat – and this minimizes frustration and mess in the dining process. I have my crab with butter and fresh squeezed lemon. It can also be used in crab cakes or crab omelets. Oh la la! Happy crabbing. 🦀
