iPhone Now Available on Google Fi Cellular Network

(Last Updated On: )

Google’s Project Fi, has just rebranded to simply Google Fi. Along with the rebrand they have announced a much larger phone lineup, including the $200 Moto G6 and iPhones. Fi is also now allowing people to transfer existing phones to their network. You can see if your phone is eligible for transfer on the Google Fi site.

As of the writing of this article in late 2018, the iPhone is available on Fi, but still in beta-testing.

It appears this ‘beta’ may mean there could be shortcomings with text messaging (iMessage should work), voicemail may be wonky, and there may possibly be some network transferring issues – Google doesn’t actually have it’s own network so the phones have to able to quickly switch between cellular connections on networks that Google has an agreement with.

According to Google Support, these iPhone Models (iOS 11 or higher) are Compatible with Google Fi

  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone X
  • iPhone 8 & 8 Plus
  • iPhone 7 & 7 Plus
  • iPhone 6S & 6S Plus
  • iPhone 6 & 6 Plus
  • iPhone 5S
  • iPhone SE

If you’ve read my previous tweets and articles on Google Fi, you’ve seen that I’ve been really impressed with Google Fi. I haven’t however had an easy transition from iPhone to Android. See my take on both experiences in these other articles.

That said, my current phone, the Pixel 2 XL, is quite an amazing device. I’ll likely stick with it on Fi until the iPhone comes out of beta.

If you’re thinking about giving Fi a try, please visit their website using this referral link, https://g.co/fi/r/YWV6PP, and I’ll get a credit towards my Fi service. Thank you 🙂
